Urban Planning Museum Shanghai:

Digital Interactive 5D City Model

As one of the most influential cities in the world, Shanghai is a global leader in the development of megacities. The current mission statement "Shanghai 2035" bundles all action plans, development concepts and guidelines in an overarching concept, with the clear goal of a competitive, innovative but also livable, healthy city, from quantity to quality.

Like the city, the Shanghai Urban Planning Museum (SUPEC) is now facing the future - with innovative technologies and mediation methods, such as the Digital Interactive 5D City Model.

Interactive 5D City Model: New centerpiece of the exhibition

The 10x20 meter mixed media space with its two-storey screen is the new centerpiece of the exhibition. Visitors and experts can walk and experience the digital city model in various dimensions: From birdview oto the walk through streets, parks and buildings.

Thanks to state-of-the-art VR technologies and 23 high-performance projectors, the walk-in screen with its digital model offers a three-dimensional and plastic impression even without 3D glasses.

The digital model provides various functions for different modes such as visitor-, expert- and VIP-mode. An Intuitively controllable user interface (UI) for PC and tablet allows visitors and the museum staff to easily navigate the city model or to start preprogrammed tours.

Immersive Mixed Media Space replaces physical city model

The former physical city model of the museum was dismantled in the course of the building's renovation. With the new digital city model, visitors can "beam" themselves to different parts of the city and streets on their own, view the city from a wide variety of perspectives or take part in thematic city tours.

The digital city model can continuously be updated and fed with new information. The advantage is that the model is always up-to-date.
